Boxes
I hate moving.
I hate packing everything into boxes, only to unpack it all again in a new place. Don't get me wrong. I love discovering new places, experiencing change, and the feeling of starting fresh somewhere new. But the packing? I hate it with all my heart.
Yet, as much as I dislike the process, moving has a way of making you reflect on the things you carry with you. And I'm not just talking about the things that fit inside a box.
When we move to a new place, we bring more than our belongings. We carry memories, dreams, friendships, and the moments we've shared with the people who have been part of our lives. We bring the goals we set for ourselves, the experiences that shaped us, and the little things that made a place feel like home.
Sometimes, we're so focused on packing our physical belongings that we forget about everything else we're taking with us.
It isn't until we take a step back that we begin to realize what we're leaving behind: a place that witnessed our growth, gave us opportunities to learn, and became part of our story. A place where we experienced new things, faced challenges, and created memories that will stay with us long after we've moved on.
This illustration began during a time when a lot was happening in my life. I was moving, adjusting to a new environment, starting a new job, and keeping up with my classes. There were a lot of things demanding my time and attention, and somewhere along the way, I found myself stepping away from drawing and sharing my work.
But it wasn't just about being busy. I also found myself in a place where inspiration didn't come as naturally as it used to.
Sometimes, as creatives, we expect ourselves to always have something to make, something to share, or something new to say. We put pressure on ourselves to keep creating, even when our minds are occupied with everything else happening around us.
For a while, I didn't feel that same spark. And instead of forcing it, I allowed myself to take a step back.
Capiies has always been more than just a creative brand to me. It's a personal project, a space where I can explore ideas, express myself, and tell stories through design and illustration. Because of that, stepping away from it wasn't something I took lightly.
Still, I had to remind myself that taking a break doesn't mean giving up. Sometimes, life asks us to focus on other things, and that's okay, too.
The story behind the illustration
The idea for this illustration came to me while I was going through the moving process. I started drawing it during that time, but between everything else happening in my life, it remained unfinished.
The boxes became a way to represent all the things we carry with us as we move through life. The people we've met, the memories we've made, the goals we're working toward, and the dreams we hope to achieve.
Each box holds something different, yet they're all part of the same journey. Some represent where we've been, while others represent where we want to go. Together, they remind us that every new chapter carries pieces of the ones that came before it.
I wanted to capture that feeling through a simple illustration. Something familiar, something we can all relate to, but with a meaning that goes beyond what we see at first glance.
Because sometimes, the simplest things can tell the most personal stories.
Finding my way back to creating
Finishing this illustration feels meaningful to me, not just because it's finally complete, but because it reminds me that creativity doesn't always happen on our schedule.
There will be times when we feel inspired and ideas seem to come effortlessly. Other times, we'll have to make room for different priorities, navigate unexpected changes, and allow ourselves to slow down.
I'm learning that both experiences are part of the process.
I don't want Capiies to become something I feel obligated to maintain just for the sake of posting. I want it to remain a place where I can explore my curiosity, share my interpretations of the world, and create things that mean something to me.
And sometimes, that means taking a little longer to finish a project. Sometimes, it means being quiet for a while. And sometimes, it means returning to something you started months ago and realizing that you're finally ready to share it.
This illustration is a small reminder of that.
I'm still figuring things out, still learning, and still finding inspiration in the world around me. I may not always be as active as I'd like to be, but the desire to create and tell stories is still here.
So, here's to the things we carry, the places that shape us, the dreams that keep us moving forward, and the stories we have yet to tell.
One box at a time.
